The Special Criminal Court (TCS) in Cameroon on Tuesday January 31st, 2023 found erstwhile Minister of Defence guilty of overbilling of contract for military equipment worth 23.9 billion FCFA.
Former Minister Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
His wife, Bernadette Mebe Ngo’o received a ten year jail sentence from the TCS, a Cameroonian court trying former government officials accused of embezzling state funds.
Other accomplices in the case were sentenced as follows:
Colonel Ghislain Mboutou Elle: 25 years in prison.
Maxime Mbangue: 25 years imprisonment.
Victor Menye: 09 years in jail.
The decision comes nearly four years, since the arrest and detention of Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o — for misappropriating public funds, bribery and aggravated money laundering.
Mebe Ngo’o was, however found not guilty of embezzlement of 196 billion FCFA by the court.
Press censorship in court.
Journalists were today barred from covering the hearing of Cameroon’s erstwhile Minister of defence, Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o.
It is unclear why access was denied reporters at the hearing of the ‘VIP prisoner’ who once appeared in court with a glass of champagne — sparking widespread condemnations.
Mebe Ngo’o was placed on a pre-trial detention at the Maximum Security Prison in Kondengui on March 8, 2019, for alleged misappropriation of public funds, bribery and aggravated money laundering.
He had denied any wrongdoing.
