Several Cameroonians have taken on social to express their expectations — as president Paul Biya addresses the nation this December, 31st 2022 at 8:00PM.
The main thread running through the messages is one of hopelessness.
“We expect nothing new from him,” says Anung Ferdinand.
Ferdinand’s thoughts are shared by Melody Nancy, who said:
“I don’t see why cameroonians are wasting their precious time watching and listening to speeches that have no impact on their lives and with no change.”
Many Cameroonians would expect Paul Biya to look at issues ranging from the economy, politics, Security, unemployment and health.
But some are mildly optimistic that this might be the case.
“Hopefully he can Address the National Identity Card system,” Nchinda Konye wrote on social media.
“Mr President please say something about north west and south west Regions,” pleads Cyrille Radiator.
Such expectations are likely to be crushed given that over the years, President Biya has failed to effectively engage with any of the issues affecting the country.
“Let him release AyukTabe and Co. Nothing new is expected, if only he will be able to go to the stage to address the nation,” said Mbetem Moses.
In last year’s speech Biya all but concluded that the Anglophone Crisis will be resolved militarily this year.
However, the reality of the past months has been one of constant kidnappings, deaths, attacks on civilians, schools — with no visible end in sight.
This approach to critical issues plaguing society is what has made many Cameroonians to give little weight to whatever promises, the president is likely to make.
“Cameroonian are tired of promises without implementation, let him keep his fake speeches to himself and family,” Rene Marvelous said.
“We are expecting nothing from him,” Daba Agu.
