Lecturers of state universities in Cameroon will start receiving their research allowances for the fourth quarter of 2024 on Monday, January 13.

The Minister of Higher Education Prof Jacques Fame Ndongo made the announcement in a press release on Wednesday.

According to the Minister, the money includes allowances relating to the Special Research Account for the Modernisation of University Research.

This he said, aims to support governance in state universities, foster applied knowledge acquisition and outreach activities.

The amount that corresponds to the 4th quarter of the 2024 financial year and will be paid through banks and over the counter at the ministry.

Payment “will begin on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the banks where the teachers’ accounts are domiciled and will continue methodically in accordance with the schedule drawn up by the relevant departments of the Ministry of Finance,” Minister Fame Ndongo wrote.

“Lecturers concerned by this method of payment should present themselves from 12 noon on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Special Allowance Accounting Agency, located on the 10th floor of ministerial building number 2, door number 1043,” he added.

Lecturers’ Call for Strike

The announced payment comes just three days after the national syndicate for lecturers in Cameroon (SYNES) called for a strike action.

Through SYNES, lecturers cited numerous issues pushing them to go on strike.

Like MMI reported earlier, some of the issues comprised nonpayment of research allowance and discrimination in the award of grants.

They also highlighted the non-payment of allowances for the fourth quarter.

Although the Minister has yielded to their demands, it remains unclear if the lecturers did strike as planned.

Classes resumed in universities across the nation on Monday, January 6, following an end-of-year festive period.
