FIFA Sanctions Cape Verde After 1-0 Victory Over Cameroon

Cape Verde has been fined CHF 5,000 (about 3.3 million CFA francs) by the world football governing body, FIFA, after their 1-0 victory over Cameroon in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The fine follows incidents after the match in Praia on September 9, where fans ran onto the pitch to celebrate.

The Cape Verdean Football Federation (FCF) has called on supporters to respect stadium rules and safety, especially ahead of their next match against Eswatini on October 13.

The federation says discipline is important if they want to avoid more sanctions and focus on making history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cup.

The victory gave Cape Verde an important boost. They now lead Group D with 19 points, ahead of runners-up Cameroon with 15 points.

This puts them in a strong position to qualify for the competition. A win or draw against Libya on October 8, along with favourable results in other games, could secure their spot.

For Cameroon, the defeat in Praia was a big setback. They now need to win all their remaining matches, starting with Angola on October 8, and hope Cape Verde drops points.

This makes their road to the World Cup much harder.

Cameroon now faces a real fight if they want to keep their dream of reaching Qatar alive. Every game will count.
