A devastating fire has left 15 families homeless, affecting over 30 people living at Sonac Street, Kumba I, in the Meme Division of the South West Region.

The inferno, which broke out late on Wednesday, destroyed at least four buildings, leaving significant property damage in its wake.

Families were unconsolable watching helplessly as the fire consumed their property.

“Look at my house wiping out before my eyes. My brother gave me 250,000 francs yesterday to rebuild my lifestyle after I faced a similar incident. Look how the money is being burnt to ashes,” a woman lamented as she watched her house consumed in the flames.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire was caused by an explosion at an illicit fuel storage facility.

Despite efforts by inhabitants to contain the blaze, the fire quickly spread, causing extensive destruction.

The damage is estimated to run into millions of francs CFA, though fortunately, no human casualties were reported.

In the aftermath of the disaster, the Divisional Officer of Kumba I, Ali Anugu, visited the scene to assess the damage.

He offered comfort to the displaced families and promised decisive government action against those responsible for the illicit fuel depot that sparked the fire.

Additionally, he assured victims that aid would be provided to help them rebuild their lives.
