At least five Cameronian soldiers have been killed with one injured and three others reported missing in an attack in Akwaya, Manyu Division of the South West Region.
A security report which MMI has seen links the attack to armed Fulani herders.
The report says the attackers assaulted a military post on Friday, January 3, in Agwa, a locality in Akwaya, killing five soldiers.
The whereabouts of three others who reportedly fled remains unknown.
According to the report, the assailants also burnt down the military post, carting weapons away.
Those killed include ACM Bekono Noel, Sgt Tedongzi, Cal Nsome Milton, Pvt 2nd Class Obama André and A/C Mutah Muutah Stephen.
Sergeant Outttou sustained injuries in the attack.
Local administrative authorities have not reacted to the latest incident.
Akwaya, where the attack occurred, lies isolated from the rest of Cameroon’s South West.
The area’s poor transport network makes land access only possible through the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
This enclavement has exposed the vast area to armed attacks from separatist groups, and intercommunity conflict.
However, attacks on soldiers are rare in the area and the cause of the recent attack remains unknown. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that the current Anglophone conflict escallated in 2017 with the killing of a similar number of soldiers in Manyu.
