Admiral James Stavridis, a former Supreme Allied Commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), has issued a firm warning of the devastating effects on the entire continent of a possible attack on Niger.
He made this remark in a post on Platform X (formerly Twitter), a few hours before the official deadline set by ECOWAS for the Niger Military to return power to President Bazoum.
Given that the West African bloc has the total backing of France and America, Admiral James Stavridis has predicted a possible degeneration of war across the continent of Africa should Niger face any attacks.
The former Nato commander tweeted, “Will this lead to a full-blown war in Africa? It certainly has the potential to do so and would be a significant and devastating event,” in reaction to a CNN article.
Meanwhile, several countries have evacuated a number of their nationals from the country since the July 26 coup, including France, the US, the UK, Italy, and Spain.
Security will likely remain especially tight in Niamey, other major cities, and along the country’s border crossings over the coming days. Security measures may include roadblocks, checkpoints, and searches of vehicles and pedestrians.
