A young Cameroonian gendarme officer died after an older road user cursed him following a slap during a routine mixed security check at the entrance of Bogo, in the Diamaré Division of the Far North Region.
A standard operation turned into drama, stirring emotions, raising questions, and prompting widespread appeals for restraint.
According to several eyewitnesses, the drama began with the arrival of an older man, seemingly in his late sixties, who, for reasons still unclear, failed to stop at the checkpoint as required.
Some think he got distracted, while others argue he might not have seen the rope stretched across the road that acted as an improvised barrier.
Alerted, a young gendarme on duty ordered the man to stop.
Tensions escalated quickly. Without attempting to understand the man’s reasons, the gendarme allegedly slapped the old man in public and immediately demanded a fine.
Strange Reaction from Older Man
This act shocked many witnesses, especially as the old man had shown no sign of resistance or disrespect.
The old man, humiliated and visibly hurt, said: “You will never again raise your hand against anyone.”
Moments later, as the situation appeared to have de-escalated and the old man had continued his journey, the gendarme suddenly collapsed at the checkpoint.
Colleagues quickly attended to him and rushed him to the Bogo District Hospital, where he unfortunately died shortly after admission.
The authorities have not officially determined the exact cause of death, but the sequence of events raises many questions.
