Gendarmes in the Far North Region of Cameroon have apprehended two people involved in human bone trafficking in the town of Makary, in the Logone and Chari Division.
The suspects were found with two decomposed skeletons concealed in bags.
The operation, conducted after a tip-off from local informants, led to the arrest of the traffickers. The Gendarmerie has since launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the network behind this macabre trade.
The arrested individuals are currently in custody, and authorities are diligently working to expose the broader network involved in this trade.
Human bone trafficking is not a new phenomenon in Cameroon. The North West, West, and Northern regions of the country are known hotspots for this illicit trade.
It is alleged that human bones are used in the production of highly addictive drugs, also known as cailloux.
This drug has been blamed for the high rate of crime, particularly among its consumers.
Local leaders and citizens in Makary have expressed shock and condemnation, urging authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice and that measures are implemented to prevent future occurrences.
