Germany humiliates Cameroon in their second outing at the ongoing FIVB competition

Cameroon has been humiliated by Germany in their second outing at the FIVB women’s world volleyball championship.

Germany cruised to a 3-0 win (14-25, 10-25, 16-25) over Cameroon on the second day of Pool A action in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship on Sunday, powered to their maiden victory of this year’s competition by 10 Lisa Gründing points.

Louisa Lippmann was also a regular on the board for the Germans, contributing nine points, including six spikes.

Cameroon came into the match off the back of their first ever win at the World Championship, a 3-1 triumph over Mexico on Day 1, but while they did their best here Germany were just too strong and Estelle Adiana was their top scorer with nine points – all of which came from spikes.

Germany had lost their first match 3-1 against the Netherlands but were incredibly unfortunate not to take that game to a fifth set, and top scorer from that match Lippmann picked up just where she had left off coming into this game, scoring Germany’s first two points and spurring them into a 5-0 lead in the first set, which Felix Koslowski’s side went on to wrap up 25-14.

This was the first ever meeting between Cameroon and Germany at a major world level competition, and once the Germans had established control of proceedings it was going to take something special for Cameroon to find a way back – especially after Gründing and Jennifer Geerties started to find their scoring form to steer their team to a 25-10 second set win.

The third set followed a similar pattern, and back-to-back Jana Franzisca Poll points saw Germany pull away after the first technical time out, with the 30-year-old also scoring Germany’s next two points to make it 12-7. Cameroon mounted a spirited comeback and went on to score a match-high 16 points but were ultimately defeated by a Barbara Roxana Wezorke block.

Argentina provide Germany’s next opponents on Monday, when Cameroon will also be in action against the Netherlands.
