The sincerity of the government’s condolences to victims of the Bamenyam attack is now under scrutiny in light of emerging reports suggesting that government authorities were aware of the impending attack before it occurred.

Questions surrounding the government’s response to the massacre have cast a shadow over what should have been a solemn moment of condolences.

At the crack of dawn on Tuesday, November 21, separatist fighters descended upon a bustling market in Bamenyam, West Region, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake.

Locals were shot, vehicles were set ablaze, and individuals were kidnapped, painting a grim picture of chaos and terror.

The attack resulted in the loss of nine lives—eight men and one woman—alongside significant material damage, numerous kidnappings, severe injuries, and lasting psychological trauma for the survivors.

A day after this tragedy, the Ministry of Communication, Rene Emmanuel Sadi, on behalf of the Government, issued a statement expressing condolences to the affected families.

“The Government of the Republic condemns with the utmost energy this heinous crime perpetrated against innocent populations in full activity, at the same time as it transmits the sincere condolences of the Head of State to the families of the victims, as well as his wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured,” Minister Sadi wrote.

However, the sincerity of these condolences is now under scrutiny.

According to the Cameroon News Agency, the vigilante committee of Bamenya had reportedly alerted the government about the looming threat, but their pleas went unanswered.

“At about 4 pm the previous day, we got information that these boys were already in Bamenkoupere, a locality in neighbouring Bagam, where they broke into a store and began drinking and saying they must invade Bamenyam,” a local vigilante recounted to CNA.

“Our president then called us to alert us. In reaction, we gathered at the market square and informed security forces, but none of them showed up. We decided to spend the night at the square till dawn.”

Despite their efforts to notify the security forces, no intervention materialised.

As dawn broke, the horrifying reality unfolded. Separatist fighters infiltrated the town, leaving death and destruction in their wake.

The vigilante committee’s accounts paint a desperate picture of attempts to seek assistance from the gendarmerie unit, all in vain.

This revelation has sparked controversy, with the populace now questioning the government’s commitment to the safety of its citizens.

Inhabitants of Galim and Mbouda, in the aftermath of the massacre, find themselves living in fear amid rumors of potential future attacks.

While reports suggest that the Governor of the West Region has called for the reinforcement of vigilante committees, the affected population remains skeptical, yearning for concrete measures to ensure their safety and prevent such tragedies from repeating.
