Medics say there is an increase in the number of cancer cases diagnosed in the North West region.
The Director of the Bamenda regional hospital Dr. Denis Nsame states that from 2017, cases have multiplied from 53 to over 100 by the end of 2021.
Dr. Denis Nsame discloses that prostate and breast cancer are the most common form in the region.
The Director records that in 2020, 97 cases of cancer were followed up by the hospital and the figures increased to 102 in 2021. Apart from prostate and breast cancer, there is also cervical cancer that is very common and on the rise.
This according to the Director, is mainly due to poor lifestyle habits.
“People are taking a lot of drugs, tobacco, and excessive alcohol”, he said.
Prevention methods it should be noted, remain available and highly encouraged.
Among them is the vaccination of young girls who are not yet sexually active so that they can develop anti-bodies and protect themselves.
Health professionals have also recommended that men above 40 years of age, women and young girls should also get screened for cancer and other illnesses.
