Cameroon’s 92-year-old president has announced that he will contest October’s presidential election. The announcement has left many with mixed feelings. According to Barrister Agbor Balla, Biya’s candidacy is a wake-up call for change. “President Paul Biya’s decision to seek yet another term is a stark reminder of the urgent need for political renewal in Cameroon.” Agbor Balla said, “After over four decades in power, this announcement is not a sign of strength; it is a reflection of a system that resists change at all costs.”
However, the human rights lawyer says despite the announcement, the future of Cameroon’s does not belong to the past. “It belongs to the millions of Cameroonians, young and old, who are demanding accountability, justice, opportunity, and true democratic governance.” Agbor Balla, who is rooting for Akere Muna, said Cameroon deserves leadership that listens, serves, and represents the hopes of the people, not one that clings to power.
Biya’s Candidacy, Golden Opportunity For Opposition
For others like Nsah Mala, a governance actor, the candidacy of President Paul Biya is a golden opportunity for the opposition to unite and bring the long-awaited change. “We demand an obligatory coalition within the real opposition,” he stated.
To him, people should not vote for anyone above 90 years old. He thinks that people around Paul Biya “are pushing” him “to run again instead of taking his rest”.
“My advice again: no matter what, whoever is eligible to vote, do NOT vote for anybody above 90 years in this election. This is the best time for CHANGE in our country, Cameroon,” he stated.
Unbelievable for Many
Biya’s announcement seems to have taken many by surprise. Reacting to Biya’s candidacy, a Cameroonian described it as “witchcraft and wickedness at the highest level”. To him, the people should “wait and see how the universe puts Biya to a bigger shame than what he is facing now.
