Workers of the Hygiene and Sanitation of Cameroon (HYSACAM), have temporarily suspended activities in Buea, following increasing threats to their lives from unknown men.
According to information gathered, suspected pro-independence fighters, have on several occasions, kidnapped some workers of the company, with some paying ransoms to be released.
The situation became exacerbated this week when a truck belonging to HYSACAM, was burnt down along the Muea-Ekona road in something that looked like a sabotage from the gunmen.
Unconfirmed information say, at least one HYSACAM worker sustained injuries during the incident.
On Tuesday December 4, 2018, HYSACAM workers are reported to have moved around the different streets of Buea, pouring out any content in their trash cans on the floor.
In something that looked as a protest, the workers indicated that they are downing their tools until their full security is guaranteed.
“We cannot continue to be victimised when our only crime is to keep Buea clean. Our colleagues are being harassed everyday by unknown men. See what they did to our colleagues in Muea. Enough is enough! We shall not work again, until such time when we can securely move around to clean the town,” Landry Mbuokem, a HYSACAM staff said.
The gravity of the situation was witnessed this Wednesday December 5, 2018, when workers of the Buea Council, were seen cleaning the streets, instead of HYSACAM.
The Mayor of Buea, has called for denizens to clean their surroundings as hysacam leaves, while top ranking officials of HYSACAM, have not commented on the issue.
However, information filtering, say,is a security meeting was convened during the week, by Southwest Administration, to access the security situation of Buea and other parts of the region, and to see how to ensure that everyone spend the end of year in security.
