Karim A. A. Khan, prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC) has outrightly condemned attacks on institutions of learning.
Karim remarked that any institution of learning should “be a safe haven for learners.”
“Schools must be places where children feel safe to learn and play,” he stated.
He further said: “attacks on educational facilities, pupils, students and teachers may constitute Rome Statute crimes.”
The Rome Statute it should be noted, establishes four core international crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.
The said crimes, are not subject to any statute of limitations.
In this light, the ICC Prosecutor noted that his office “will work with all partners to seek accountability for such acts.”
His warning comes at a time when schools and learners continue to come under attacks from separatist fighters in the English speaking regions of Cameroon.
Most recently, separatist fighters had some town of the two regions grounded to stall the new academic year from commencing, a practice they have done for four years now.
