The Bamenda-based Defires Amputee Football Club is a section of the ThinkBig Organization, one of several groups bringing comfort to victims of the Anglophone crisis.
Among its major successes, Defires Amputee Football Club was represented in Angola in October 2019.
Made up of about 20 amputees, 9 are displaced from villages in the North West region. Over 15 are mobility challenged, and the team has a fanclub of over 25 persons with hearing impairment.
Defires Amputee Football Club trains at CBC Nkwen, Upstation and other parts of the town every week.
“Most of the players are IDPs and we use the team as a form of new livelihood and trauma healing for us,” the team leader tells MMI.
The team, he adds, is being limited by a number of challenges: “at this point in time, our club is facing challenges due to the conflicts and COVID-19.”
