Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, a prominent Nigerian cross-dresser, recently deleted all his Instagram posts, leaving behind a single message directed at those threatening him in connection to a bribery scandal and an ongoing investigation. This came shortly after he posted a cryptic message about contemplating suicide, raising alarm among his followers.
The controversy stems from an audio clip that resurfaced online, accusing Bobrisky of bribing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with 15 million naira to evade arrest for allegedly abusing the Nigerian currency. Bobrisky has denied the allegations. The situation follows a prior incident where he spent six months in jail for a similar offence.
Cryptic Message Sparks Worry Among Fans
On September 26, around 6 PM, Bobrisky cleared his Instagram account, leaving only one post addressing the alleged threats he was facing. He expressed fear of being arrested and jailed again, but staunchly rejected the accusations, asserting that both God and the law would reveal the truth. He also emphasised his willingness to cooperate with the investigation, provided it was conducted independently and without intimidation.
In his post, Bobrisky stated:
“…I am ready for any investigation, but not in the same EFCC office where I was detained. Any investigation must be free of intimidation, and I demand it be independent and open for the world to see. You cannot bury me because of my social media lifestyle. Anybody can alter or frame any audio—best of luck to those who published it. I’m not the maker of that audio, and nothing will change that. I’ll meet you in court if you have a case against me….”
Suicide Message Raises Alarms
His decision to remove all his social media content came just minutes after he posted a distressing message about contemplating suicide, a topic he had never previously discussed. In his Instagram status, Bobrisky wrote:
“I’ve never considered suicide in my life, but now it’s on my mind after seeing what people are capable of just to bring someone down. I don’t need sympathy. The only people I might have needed it from are my late parents. Who will fight for me? Friends? Haters, you’ve won.”
Return to Instagram, But Concerns Remain
By the morning of September 27, 2024, Bobrisky had re-uploaded several photos to his Instagram account and removed the single post he had left up, including the troubling message about suicide.
Bobrisky’s recent actions and statements have sparked concern among his supporters and critics alike. While some continue to criticize his lifestyle, others argue that, regardless of societal norms, he deserves compassion and support. Additionally, there is speculation that his legal team may not be providing adequate guidance, as his public remarks could be used against him if he faces charges following the investigation.
