As the countdown to the Africa Cup of Nations continues, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are pressing on with preparations amid a tense and closely watched build-up.
The team’s road to AFCON 2025 has been marked by off-field challenges, administrative disagreements and uncertainty around the technical bench, but attention is now firmly turning to football as the tournament kicks off in Morocco on December 21.
The first group of players and members of the technical staff arrived in Casablanca, Morocco, after a journey of just over five hours, officially opening the final phase of preparations.
The Lions are expected to settle into camp, hold tactical sessions and play warm-up matches as they fine-tune their approach for the competition.
Despite the noise surrounding the camp in recent weeks, after the coach Marc Brys was abruptly sacked, the atmosphere within the squad is described as calm, with players focused on restoring confidence and unity.
Cameroon remains one of Africa’s most successful football nations. The Indomitable Lions last lifted the AFCON trophy in 2017 in Gabon, defeating Egypt 2–1 in the final after a memorable comeback.
That triumph secured Cameroon’s fifth continental title, reinforcing its reputation as a tournament team capable of rising when it matters most.
At the last AFCON, held in Côte d’Ivoire in January 2024, Cameroon endured a difficult campaign. The Lions qualified from the group stage but were eliminated in the round of 16 after a 2–0 defeat to Nigeria.
That early exit left fans disappointed and intensified calls for renewal within the team, both in terms of leadership and playing style.
As AFCON 2025 begins in Morocco, Cameroon enters the tournament as a respected but closely scrutinized contender.
The squad blends experienced internationals with younger talents eager to prove themselves on the continental stage.
If the Lions can overcome internal distractions, rediscover their defensive discipline and show greater efficiency in attack, they have the potential to go deep into the competition. For a nation that measures success by trophies, the mission is clear: move past the troubles, unite behind the badge and remind Africa why Cameroon remains a giant of the game.
