José Vítor dos Santos Peseiro is a Portuguese footballer who currently manages the Nigerian national football team and hopes to change the Super Eagles’ fortunes come Sunday, 11th February, during the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
On Wednesday, they took out South Africa’s Bafana Bafana from the continental competition during a penalty shootout.
Jose Peseiro, who has successfully emphasised not conceding, has remarkably kept a clean sheet throughout the competition. “I have chosen another strategy. The players believe in it—don’t concede goals because we will score at least one,” Peseiro said in one press briefing in Abidjan.
“Our team has a huge state of mind. The team fights together; there are 25 of us in the squad, and it’s difficult to beat us,” Peseiro said after yesterday’s semi-final game.
“I am very happy; the players are happy; they deserve it; we deserve it; the Super Eagles deserve it; the Nigerian people deserve it,” he added.
Nigeria currently holds the record for the most medals won in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles have achieved an impressive tally of 15 medals at the tournament. There were three gold, four silver, and eight bronze medals awarded.
Nigeria has an impressive track record in the Africa Cup of Nations, with numerous accolades to their name.
The team is on track to secure another medal as they emerged victorious against South Africa on Wednesday, securing their spot in the final of the 2023 edition.
Nigeria is set to compete against Ivory Coast in the final on Sunday, with hopes of securing their fourth-ever trophy.
AFCON finals: Nigeria faces Ivory Coast
Nigerians and Ivorians are looking ahead to Sunday’s AFCON finals. It will be a rematch of their group stage encounter on January 18, which saw the Super Eagles emerge victorious with a 1-0 scoreline.
Some Ivorians have qualified for their semifinal win with a miracle from God. “Inshallah, God will do it, no doubt,” Simion Diakité told The Associated Press, referring to the final game on Sunday.
“The way the Elephants, the national team, have been advancing is only a miracle, and only God can do that,” Ange Assamoi, another Ivorian, said.
But could they be underestimating Fae? Some sports pundits believe that Fae’s management skills have brought the team so far and that they will eventually win the trophy against Nigeria.
Egypt has established itself as the most successful nation in AFCON history, having won the tournament a remarkable seven times. Cameroon has been victorious on five occasions, while Ghana has claimed the title four times.
