The former prolific goalkeeper for the Indomitable Lions in a radio interview with Dynamic FM in Douala has criticised the fact that his nationality has often come to question when he has sought to get into a leadership position in the country.
The case came to an all time high in 2020 when Joseph Antoine Bell sought to run for a position at the Douala Municipality. His candidacy however rejected as the former Cameroonian International was said to possess dual nationality, something which is not recognized in Cameroon.
When asked about what he thought about the decision to turn down his candidacy for his dual citizenship, Antoine Bell hit back at the whole system, stating that his dual nationality was never questioned when he was representing and winning trophies for Cameroon.
“The questions of my nationality started coming when I finished winning cups for Cameroon, taking Cameroon to the World cup, representing the country everywhere…” He said.
The goalkeeper accused the state of conveniently using his services when he was at his sporting prime without questioning his nationality but soon discover it can be used as a barrier for him to get into leadership positions in the country.
Till date, Antoine Bell is recognized as one of Africa’s greatest ever goalkeepers.
