Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appeared in public on Wednesday for the first time since the 12-day war between Israel and Iran. The highly anticipated appearance was broadcast by state television, showing the 86-year-old cleric entering a mosque adjacent to his office and residence in central Tehran.
Khamenei waved and nodded to a standing, chanting crowd. He did not immediately deliver a public statement during the appearance.
Heightened Security During Conflict
Khamenei’s absence during the conflict had fuelled speculation over his location and safety. As Iran’s highest authority with the final say over all state matters, the Supreme Leader’s silence was notable throughout the war’s most intense phases. Sources close to the matter indicated that Khamenei spent the duration of the conflict in a secure underground facility, reflecting escalated threats to his life.
Following U.S. military involvement in the conflict, President Donald Trump made direct references to Khamenei’s whereabouts. In a series of social media posts, Trump warned, “We know where he is… but we have no plans to strike him—at least for now.”
Pre-Recorded Remarks After Ceasefire
On June 26, shortly after a ceasefire between Iran and Israel took effect, Khamenei issued his first statement in over a week. In a pre-recorded video aired by state media, he framed Iran’s missile attack on a U.S. airbase in Qatar as a retaliatory act and a demonstration of Iranian capabilities.
“The Islamic Republic slapped America in the face,” Khamenei said. He also warned that any future U.S. or Israeli military action would be met with further responses: “If they attack again, they will face more destruction.”
Context: U.S. Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites
The remarks followed the June 22 U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The Trump administration claimed the attacks were aimed at degrading Iran’s nuclear capabilities. President Trump later asserted the sites had been “obliterated.”
Iranian officials, including Khamenei, have contested this characterisation. In his statement, the Supreme Leader said the U.S. “gained nothing” from the strikes and emphasised that the country’s nuclear programme remains largely intact.
Significance of Khamenei’s Reappearance
Khamenei’s reemergence marks a significant moment in the post-war period, signalling internal stability amid ongoing tensions. While the ceasefire has held for now, regional observers remain cautious about prospects for lasting peace.
