A joint group of domestic workers in Kribi has decried horrific work conditions they have been subjected to by their bosses. They include house helps, private drivers, and gardeners.

The consortium of workers has issued a joint statement, demanding improved salaries, and general work conditions in the posts of duty.

“We are the ones who cook for the owners of big mansions and big cars, we keep their surroundings clean, their clothes, and their children, but in return, all we get is disdain, disrespect, and catechist salaries. We say no to this, and we want to be given more humane treatment.” a house help declared.

The domestic house helps also used the opportunity in their joint statement to sensitize and ask for better rewards for their services. “We are not objects, neither are we slaves. We deserve to be treated with dignity by our employers.” They demanded.

It should be emphasized that the distress call from the domestic workers in Kribi is a general worry affecting almost all others in all regions of the country.

Most domestic helpers earn salaries that are not even up to half of the amount stipulated as the minimum wage in Cameroon. Several others are heavily exploited and pass through all forms of maltreatment from their employers.
