The Kumba City Council has signed a deal with Société Anonyme des Boissons du Cameroun (SABC) and the Presidential Reconstruction Plan to construct a modern stadium in the city worth FCFA 500 million.
The deal was signed May 30 in Buea by heads of the three structures which will be involved in the sponsorship and construction of the stadium.
It will be the first modern football stadium in Kumba, a key economic hub in the South West region known for its vibrant football activities.
Speaking to journalists, the Kumba City Mayor, Gregory Mewanu, lauded the initiative as another major step in the development of the city.
He highlighted the prospects of this facility to nurture and promote budding football talents in the city.
“We are really happy and we want to use this opportunity to thank SABC, what we formerly called Le Boisson du Cameroon, for making this sum of money available,” Mr Mewanu said.
“500 million francs CFA can’t actually build a stadium when we talk of a stadium in the sense of a stadium… It is going to enhance the building of a grandstand upon a football field which exists already as it is called the Kumba City Council Municipal Stadium. We couldn’t call it a stadium because there isn’t even a grandstand for people to sit and watch football. This funding will initiate the construction of a grandstand where the residents of Kumba can at least sit. It will be the first…,” he added.
