The Mayor of Kumbo, Bui division of the North West region, Mborong Vernatius Bongkiyung has closed Mbveh market, the biggest trading center in the municipality.

In a decision signed recently, the Mayor ordered the closure of the market indefinitely.

“…from the 30th September 2022, Mbveh market will be temporarily closed until further notice” the decision reads in part.

According to the Mayor, the market has become a source of funding for terrorists activities in Kumbo.

“It has become the main source of income for Amba terrorists in Kumbo”, Mayor Mborong said adding that “some people in this market are collaborating with the terrorists to generate income for this party of death and themselves”

“It has come to my understanding that this market is becoming a rallying point for Amba terrorists from all over the region due to the large income being generated from this market” the Mayor went on.

Regretting that the population has continued to pay a high price of deprivation, extortion and torture in the hands of these ‘criminals’, the Mayor said it has become impossible to provide basic services in town.

Announcing sweeping measures to take back control, the municipal magistrate said, “loading of trucks is hereby relocated to Tobin Bambui junction and smaller vehicles to Tobin roundabout or squares”

“All traders in and around Mbveh market are requested to come to the council in person for the identification of their business places” the mayor ordered, soliciting state security services for implementation.

Traders and city dwellers have denounced the move, noting that it limits their activities as well as puts them in more harm’s way. This, as they will again be caught between government and separatists who will do all in their power to have them comply.

Civilians have already been caught up in the violence multiple times, with the apex often being contrasting decisions between the warring parties. These include among others, school and ghost towns.
