Along the Bamboutous Mountains in the West Region of Cameroon lies an extraordinary natural feature, Lake Baleng, a crater lake that attracts scores of tourists each year.

Aside being a tourist destination, Lake Baleng is also the traditional shrine of the Baleng people of Bafoussam III in the West Region of the country.

The lake is among the many touristic wonders of the West Region, among which is the legendary Foumban Palace.

Also called Lake Sabichi, Lake Baleng is located at 1,500 meters above sea level, and contains an 800-meter-wide crater.

The body of water is surrounded by evergreen trees hanging around the crater slopes.

Its strategic features and beauty have not escaped the attention of scores of foreign tourists who have visited Cameroon.

Lake Baleng was included among Cameroon’s national heritage sites in 2020, when the government officially recognised its touristic and cultural importance.

The lake is, however, not the only crater lake in Cameroon.

Two other crater lakes exist in the Southwest Region, popularly called the Twin Lakes of Kupe Muanenguba.
