Eleven-year-old human rights activist, Wilson Malala Helen, has appealed for the protection of children, especially those caught up in crisis.
Malala’s appeal follows revelations about the sexual harassment of 16-year-old Jato Sonita, lead singer of the Forest Children musical group, by armed men.
Jato recently recounted how she was raped at age 13 in 2021.
Her story has resonated with Wilson Malala Helen, who says she stands “with Miss Sonita and the entire forest children team.”
Malala, who is also spoken word artist, added that it was disheartening for her as a human rights activist to hear the sad story Jato Sonita recounted.
“What caught my attention most was what she said concerning her being raped and impregnated by an unknown gunman,” Malala said.
“Her case is just one of a thousand.”
Cases of gender-based violence and attacks on education have spiralled during the crisis in the English-speaking Regions of Cameroon, particularly impacting women and children.
There have been calls for more protection from the government, parents and guardians for these vulnerable groups as the crisis rages on.
“I hereby call on the government of Cameroon, all the armed factions involved, and national and international stakeholders to pay more attention to the protection of women and children because they are the most vulnerable in times of crises,” Wilson Malala said.
Cases of gender-based violence, especially rape, are rife.
Human rights organisations such as the Center for Human Rights and Democracy for Africa (CHRDA) have reported that a day does not pass without a rape incident recorded in the English-speaking Regions of Cameroon.
Despite these atrocities being committed, rape victims hardly speak up, and this also makes their protection difficult.
A study from the Cameroon Human Rights Commission said most victims don’t come forward for fear they won’t be believed.
As such, silence has become the preferred option.
The case of Jato Sonita remained a secret to the public until August 28, 2024, when she decided to speak out.
This followed widely circulated allegations on social media accusing her manager of impregnating her two years back.
