Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday conceded defeat in the country’s closely watched presidential election, just under two hours before the final results were due to be officially announced. Addressing the nation, Chakwera said,

“It is only right that I concede defeat out of respect for your will as citizens and out of respect for the constitution. I am fully committed to … a peaceful transfer of power.”

The concession came as official results showed former President Peter Mutharika leading decisively in the September 16 vote. Mutharika’s supporters reportedly celebrated at the national results centre upon hearing the news.

A Historic Rivalry Reaches Its Fourth Round

This month’s election marked the fourth electoral showdown between Mutharika, 85, and Chakwera, 70. Mutharika previously won the 2014 and 2019 elections, although his 2019 victory was annulled by Malawi’s constitutional court due to widespread irregularities, including the use of correction fluid on results sheets. Chakwera subsequently won the 2020 re-run by a wide margin.

Political analysts had predicted a strong challenge from Mutharika, citing the country’s worsening economic conditions and public dissatisfaction with Chakwera’s handling of recent crises.

Economic and Climate Pressures Shape the Election

Malawi has faced severe economic hardships in recent years. Inflation has remained above 20% for more than three years, and nearly three-quarters of Malawians live below the World Bank’s poverty line of $3 a day. Around half of the population does not receive the minimum number of calories necessary for adequate nutrition.

Climate-related disasters have further worsened living conditions. A devastating cyclone and regional drought have destroyed crops, deepening food insecurity and economic strain. Analysts noted that these factors likely influenced voters’ decisions in the 2025 election.

MEC to Confirm Final Results

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is scheduled to release the final presidential election result later on Wednesday. Despite Chakwera’s concession, the official announcement will formalize Mutharika’s victory and pave the way for a peaceful transition.

This peaceful concession marks a significant moment in Malawi’s democratic history, demonstrating respect for electoral processes and the constitution. Observers hope it sets a precedent for future elections in Malawi and the wider Southern African region.
