The body of an eight-year-old girl identified as Favour has been retrieved from River Manyu, Mamfe Town in the South West Region of Cameroon.
The class two pupil of Saint Joseph Primary School Mamfe was carried away by river currents Wednesday, March 3, 2021, as she set out to fetch water.
Mobilizations of relatives and population of “Banso Quarter” in Mamfe to get the child alive failed. The body was discovered some five kilometers from where she has swept away.
“We, the population of Mamfe, are accusing the water distribution company of causing the death of the child,” a resident of Mamfe told Mimi Mefo Info on phone Friday, March 5th, 2021.
According to the man, there has been no potable water and electricity supply in Mamfe Town, headquarters of Manyu Division for over a month today. Given the non-availability of portable water, children and women are forced to harvest water from the river.
He regrets that no official has explained why the town is without potable water.
Locals attest that there is an understandable level of security in Mamfe Town and therefore does not understand why immediate action has not been taken to repair any technical failure.
