Many people are feared dead in a landslide that occurred at Chomba village in the outskirts of Bamenda, North West Regional capital.

The community was left in shock Friday, September 27, after a landslide swept through the village, leaving a trail of destruction.

At least three people have been confirmed to have died, and many others are feared to have been buried in the mud that levelled many buildings and caused damage to a heavy-duty truck.

Villagers say signs of a landslide were glaring before it happened.

“The hill had cracked since, from the middle,” said a voice in an amateur video shot at the scene.

“We suspect many people have died in the rubble,” he added, mentioning that three people have not been found.

“We do not know how and where to start searching,” he lamented.

Authorities have not officially reacted to the incident as the villagers struggle to find the missing persons.

The landslide is thought to have been provoked by heavy rains in the locality this week.

Before the incident, the National Climate Change Observatory (ONACC) had warned about record levels of rainfall between September 20 and 30 across the nation.

Kate Bih contributed to this report.
