The growing conflict between the Paramount ruler of the Bamoun Sultanate, Sultan Ibrahim Mbombo Njoya and the Mayor of Foumban, Patricia Ndam Njoya will be showing another face as mayor decides on demolishing rehabilitation works carried out by the sultan.

The two have always made a public show of their disagreements.
Mayor Patricia Ndam Njoya in a letter to the monarch sent on December 24, 2020 informed him that she was going to destroy the entrance gate into Foumban, a project the Sultan had taken upon himself to do.

The point of rehabilitation by Sultan Njoya was a major source of conflict between the pair. It reached boiling point when the Mayor went to the site herself and asked that work be stopped with immediate effect.

According to the Mayor, the Sultan had not demanded for authorization from the Municipality to undertake such major projects, stating that it was disrespectful to her office and capacity as the mayor of the town.

The wife of Late Adamou Ndam Njoya also said that the rehabilitation works were the sole responsibility of the council and not individual efforts.

Despite the Mayor’s opposition however, the Sultan continued the rehabilitation of the entrance gate and even sent an invitation to the Mayor for the official inauguration of the gate slated for January 3, 2020.
For now, the Sultan has not yet reacted upon receiving the information sent to him by the Mayor.
