MECUDA-USA Denies Purchase of COVID-19 Kits Burnt by Separatist Fighters

Some Separatist fighters in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions yesterday set ablaze some buckets that had been donated for the battle against COVID-19 in Mbengwi, North West Region.

The action has met with widespread criticism with many blaming the perpetrators of the act for not being considerate.

With the ongoing controversy, the Meta Cultural and Development Association, MECUDA-US branch has denied being a participant to the fundraising that purchased the equipment.

In a public notice, Emmanuel Ngwa, MECUDA-US chapter President says social media, voice messages, video and text messages circulating about MECUDA Cameroon in response to the COVID-19 crisis and the insinuation by some, that MECUDA USA was a participant in fund raising and subsequent launching in Mbengwi is being spread with malicious intent.

“Any information that our organization in the USA was a participant in this undertaking is false and baseless” he says.

Emmanuel Ngwa says on April 13th 2020 MECUDA-USA executive members in an emergency conference call reached a unanimous decision not to conduct any fund raising for the COVID-19 in Meta, Cameroon.

In addition to the fact that it was first launched as a project being undertaken by a Family Foundation in Cameroon, “many of our members are at home in their houses in the USA due to COVID-19 lock down and some have already lost their jobs. It was therefore inconceivable to advocate for our members to lend a helping hand from a position of financial weakness” he explains.

“We are also mindful that this is a free society and therefore we can not mandate anyone or tell any Meta child how to spend their personal finances” he adds.

Yesterday’s incident in Mbengwi, the MECUDA-US chapter President however says, does not give anyone cause to rejoice. “We are all disappointed with what is unfolding but disappointments are not special gifts reserved for the poor, the difference is what do we do about it?” He asks.

The Anglophone crisis in Cameroon’s Anglophone Regions has been raging in for close to four years now.
