Melong:
Soldier lynched for allegedly stabbing motorbike rider to death

By Amina Hilda

An officer of the Rapid Intervention Battalion, BIR of Cameroon’s military has been beaten to death for allegedly stabbing a commercial motorcycle rider to death.
The incident happened Sunday May 1 in Melong, Moungo division of the Littoral region. An angry mob is said to have manhandled the soldier to death on grounds that he stabbed a commercial motorcyclist to death.

Reports hold that, the soldier used a knife he had hung to his waist to knife the rider to death. He is said to have demanded for passage for a military detachment that was stuck in traffic to no avail.

When the rider denied, the soldier is said to have stabbed the commercial bike rider to death in the full view of the public. The BIR officer tried escaping after committing the act but the angry population got hold of him and tortured him to death.

Such incidents have become common across the country. This is even worst in the restive North West and South West regions wherein soldiers have been repeatedly accused of committing excesses with impunity.

The Melong incident comes six months after a gendarme officer was lynched in Buea, Fako division of the South West region for shooting a pupil to death.
