Civil Servants in Menchum Division of the North West region who have abandoned their duty posts for greener pastures will be sanctioned, the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) has warned.
Many state employees, reports say, have left their jobs for better opportunities abroad.
In the letter dated October 28, the SDO for Menchum, Abdoulahi Aliou, accused service heads of complicity with the fleeing civil servants, who still receive salaries despite doing no work.
“It has been brought to my notice that a handful of State employees have actually abandoned their duty posts and vamoosed overseas for greener pastures, in complaisant with their immediate bosses while devouring the States hard earned resources,” reads the SDO letter, which MMI has seen.
He asked all service heads within the division to forward to his office names of civil servants who have abandoned their duty post for possible sanctions.
“I have the honour to request you to forward the names of the concerned State personnel for necessary administrative measures to be taken against, failure which you shall be considered as accomplices in the crime thereto,” he told heads of government services in Menchum.
He gave November 5, 2024, as the deadline for them to file in the names of absentee workers.
Absenteeism in Cameroon’s civil service is rampant, with thousands of employees reportedly abandoning work in search for better opportunities abroad.
In the 2025 budgetary orientation circular signed last week, President Paul Biya ordered the government to dismiss 8,125 absentee civil servants from the public service.
