Fiery female lawyer, Barrister Michéle Ndoki has announced that she will be standing against Professor Maurice Kamto to contest for the post of President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) party.
This surprising announcement was made by the lawyer over the weekend in a televised TV debate on Canal 2 International, L’Arène.
Having established herself over the years as a very close ally to current president Professor Maurice Kamto, many have been left stunned by the lawyer’s sudden announcement.
Many persons have expressed mixed reactions, with some others viewing it as the beginning of a long squabble that might engulf the party in a not-so-distant future.
Though also never confirmed publicly by either Professor Kamto or Bar. Ndoki, some opinions who had claimed a strained relationship between the pair think this is a manifestation of it.
Within the CRM, there are equally debates about the announcement of Barrister Ndoki on her ambitions to challenge the chairman.
Given that Ndoki’s decision fall in line with the party’s policies, the inside circle is bent on seeing that it does not destabilize the party.
“Michèle Ndoki has every right to challenge the incumbent president for the position of chairman of the CRM, her ambitions are very legitimate…” The First Vice President of the party Mamadou Mota has declared.
“…it is now left on Michèle Ndoki to convince the CRM militants in the next convention, which the incumbent president of course remains favourite,” he added.
“President Kamto toiled to get to the position where he is today… The president still has 2 mandates if he still wishes to lead the party, and if the militants still trust him to do so.” The Secretary-General of the Party, Roger Justin Noah has also stated.
Having spent close to 6 months in exile in Ivory Coast, after having equally spent jail time in Cameroon, Michèle Ndoki, formerly seen by colleagues as a symbol for the CRM party is now viewed by some members of the inner circle as a divisive figure.
This is the notion as her opinion to run against the very popular party president who is still very eligible for 2 mandates may cause further tensions within the party.
It should be known that after the 2018 party convention, an amendment was made to the party’s constitution, permitting the president to stand for two more terms, rather than one.
