The National Chairman of the United Democratic Party, El Hadj Buchong Lawan Bako has said that payments of the 2018 senatorial elections campaign fund has been made in the party’s account after long talks with competent institutions charged with the payments.
Speaking to the press in Bamenda, El Hadj Lawan Bako said: “we use this opportunity to inform you that at last, the Minister for Territorial Administration Atanga Nji Paul has paid the UDP campaign funds for the 2018 senatorial election without interest. It is regrettable that it has taken him eight months to pay in this money into the UDP bank account …we hereby urge the Head of State to sanction Mr. Atanga Nji Paul for his irregular acts which violates article 285 of the Electoral Code”.
SECTION 285.- Public funds earmarked for the funding of election campaigns for
the election of Members of Parliament, Senators, regional or municipal councillors, shall be shared in 2 (two) equal parts among the political parties
taking part in the elections as follows:
– the first part shall be paid after publication of the lists of candidates
to all parties depending on the lists submitted and endorsed in the
various constituencies.
– the second part shall be paid after the proclamation of results to parties proportionately to the number of seats obtained.
While calling on the Head of State to always check and sanction what he calls excesses of members of his government, he has called on other political parties to also be transparent with their finances especially that from the government.
The recent recruitment launched by the head of state to intergrate 2000 PhD holders as lecturers in state universities according to the UDP Chairman, is a laudable initiative.
