The Ministry of Secondary Education (Minesec) has shutdown 105 private secondary schools operating in seven regions of Cameroon for non-compliance with legal procedures ahead of the 2026/2027 school year.

In a press release dated July 20, Secondary Education Minister Prof. Nalova Lyonga said the affected institutions failed to meet legal and regulatory requirements governing the operation of private schools.

Five schools in the North West are affected by the decision, among them Baptist Secondary School Jikejem, Oku, while 11 schools have been shut down in the South West, all of them operating in Fako Division.

The Litoral Region alone hosts half of the affected institutions (52), while no schools in the East, North and Far North regions are affected by the decision.

The Ministry of Secondary Education said several of the schools were operating without authorization for setting up, while others were functioning without authorization to open.

The decision forms part of efforts to enforce compliance with education regulations and ensure that learners study in safe and approved environments.
