Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has decried the skyrocketing increase in the rate of crimes in urban areas.

He made the remarks on the occasion of the first biannual conference of Regional Governors in Yaoundé, Centre region of Cameroon.

“We have seen a significant increase in crime in urban areas,” noted Paul Atanga Nji

He added that the increase in criminality is manifested by “attacks in city taxis by false passengers who are accomplices of certain dangerous drivers. Motorcycle taxi drivers who attack and kill citizens, as well as targeted assassinations, home robberies.”

In his speech, he applauded the actions of the security forces, which, according to him, have made it possible to get hold of some of the outlaws in the cities of Douala and Yaoundé.

To put an end to this situation of insecurity in the big cities, Paul Atanga Nji called for the participation of all actors. He announced that the identification of all motorcycle taxi drivers and owners practicing in this field of activity will henceforth be compulsory.

“It is time to put some order in the sector of motorcycle taxis and city taxis. And for that, we are counting on the frank collaboration of the unions in these sectors of activity and on the collaboration of the populations,” he said.
