The sons and daughters of Mankon, both home and abroad on Tuesday 7th June 2022 turned up in their thousands to mourn the ‘disappearance’ of Fon Angwafor III. The ‘disappearance’ of the North West monarch was announced some weeks ago.
The people of Mankon nevertheless equally celebrated the enthronement of a new Fon, who will lead the people of the Fondom henceforth.
With the ‘disappearance’ of the old Fon, however, not only the people of Mankon, but Cameroon has lost an icon.
At the time he journeyed with his ancestors, Fon Angwafor III was the active National Vice President of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, (CPDM) party, second only to the chairman President Paul Biya.
Fon Angwafor III before returning to Cameroon and taking up the mantle of leadership, worked as an agricultural engineer in Nigeria during the colonial period.
Upon his return, Fon Angwafor acted as one of the major advocates for the Reunification of the two Cameroons, and also a return to multiparty politics in the Reunified Cameroon.
He would later on become a Member of Parliament, and then the first National Vice President of the CPDM, a position he held on to for decades.
With the deterioration of the Anglophone crisis, Fon Angwafor III, who always stood by President Biya’s idea of maintaining unity, always believed dialogue was the best way out of the conflict.
His longevity within the political scene in Cameroon above all earned him the nickname “King Solomon.” Though he remains criticized by some persons, there is little denying Fon Angwafor III’s ‘disappearance’ will leave a huge void within Cameroon’s political and cultural landscape.
