Ndzerem-Nyam massacre - conflicting accounts

Two days after the deadly events in Ndzerem-Nyam, Jakiri Subdivision, a clearer but more complex picture is emerging, one that increasingly challenges the initial narrative that government forces stormed a cultural festival.

MMI News can now confirm from multiple independent sources that the military operation likely took place between 3:00am and 4:00am on Sunday, April 26, 2026. This timeline is reinforced by early alerts seen by MMI, including a post at 6:30am by FOMO TV warning of an “invasion” in Kwanso, and another at 7:30am stating: “Numerous gun sounds are coming from Kwanso right… Stay tuned.”

The timing is significant. It suggests that the shooting occurred hours before any daytime gathering could have been underway, directly contradicting earlier claims that the attack took place during a public cultural festival attended by civilians.

Target Was Not the Festival Ground, But a Specific Location

As the timeline shifts, so too does the understanding of what exactly was targeted.

Discussions with high-ranking members of the Nso community, as well as corroborating accounts from sources on the ground, indicate that the military operation was likely aimed at a specific residence believed to belong to a separatist commander, rather than the general festival space.

One local account reviewed by MMI News states that “the army did not storm the palace,” but instead “targeted the house of a known Amba boss who had organised a party… the operation took place around 4AM while the dancing was ongoing.”

This version of events reframes the incident as a targeted night-time raid on a suspected separatist gathering, rather than an indiscriminate daytime attack on a cultural crowd—though it does not rule out the presence of civilians at that location.

Footage from the scene reviewed by MMI News appears to show the aftermath within a residential compound rather than an open festival ground, with visible signs of damage and individuals gathered in confined spaces. In one clip, voices can be heard referencing the shooting as having occurred “during the night,” further supporting accounts that the operation took place before dawn. However, the footage does not conclusively establish the identities of those present or their roles.

NYAMCUDA: “Nwerong Entered… Without That Accord”

The Ndzerem-Nyam Cultural and Development Association (NYAMCUDA) had, even before the killings, raised alarm over escalating tensions tied to a traditional dispute involving the Gwan Fondom.

In a statement issued during the cultural week, the association described how prior discussions had taken place between the Fon of Gwan and the Fon of Ndzerem-Nyam regarding attendance at the event. According to NYAMCUDA, the Fon of Ndzerem-Nyam had “respectfully advised him to wait for the appropriate time and formal invitation.”

However, the situation took a different turn.
“To the surprise of many,” the statement reads, “the Nwerong of Gwan entered the Ndzerem-Nyam Palace today without that accord.”

The association further noted that in response, “His Majesty, alongside his notables, chose to leave the palace, emphasising a strong message.”

This forced entry, described by locals as provocative and accompanied by a large contingent, is believed to have significantly heightened tensions in the village in the hours leading up to the military operation.

Festival Disrupted Before the Shooting Began

The NYAMCUDA account and multiple local testimonies suggest that by Saturday, April 25, the cultural festival had already been disrupted.

According to the association, the presence of the uninvited group and the risk of confrontation forced a shutdown of activities. This is further echoed in local discussions indicating that gatherings had shifted away from formal festival grounds and into smaller, less controlled settings.

If accurate, this means that by the time the military operation occurred in the early hours of Sunday, the official cultural festival was no longer actively underway, further weakening the initial framing of the incident.

Who Was Present and Who Was Killed?

The question of who exactly was present at the targeted location, and who among them were killed, remains deeply contested.

Initial reports, including those by MMI News, identified individuals believed to be civilians, including a motorbike rider and a carpenter. However, newer accounts suggest that some of those present at the location may have had links to armed groups or were attending a gathering hosted by a separatist figure.

One widely circulated field account claims that “apart from separatists, some civilians were in the house where a feast was going on,” while also noting that “government forces did not fire at a group of people in an open festival event” but instead “targeted houses where they suspected separatists were hiding.”

Another sensitive and unverified claim relates to Yaah Ntsengong (Yaa Nsahlai), previously reported as a civilian victim and member of the royal family. Some sources now allege that she was “holding a shotgun” and outside at the time of the operation, though this has not been independently confirmed.

These conflicting accounts highlight the difficulty of drawing clear distinctions between civilians and combatants in a context where social gatherings, armed presence, and community life often overlap.

Gunfire Heard Before Dawn, Panic After Sunrise

The sequence of events described in multiple sources paints a consistent picture of pre-dawn violence followed by morning confusion.

While the operation itself appears to have occurred between 3:00am and 4:00am, broader awareness of the incident only spread later. Social media posts and eyewitness alerts began circulating around 6:00am, suggesting that many residents only became aware of the scale of the violence after it had already taken place.

This delayed awareness may explain why early reporting linked the attack to daytime festival activities, when in reality, the shooting had already concluded.

An Information War With No Single Narrative

What is emerging from Ndzerem-Nyam is not just a security incident, but a complex information battle.

Different actors, local communities, cultural institutions, security sources, and social media voices, are presenting overlapping but often contradictory versions of events.

Some accounts frame the operation as a justified strike on a separatist gathering. Others maintain that civilians were indiscriminately caught in the violence. Still others point to the traditional dispute as a key trigger.

At this stage, no single narrative fully reconciles all available evidence.

Authorities Silent as Questions Mount

More than 48 hours after the incident, authorities have yet to provide a detailed official account addressing the growing discrepancies.

There has been no clarification on:

  • The exact timing of the operation
  • The nature of the target
  • The identities of those killed
  • Or the extent of civilian involvement

This absence of clarity is increasingly significant, as new information continues to challenge earlier assumptions.

A Story Still Unfolding

The Ndzerem-Nyam killings are now understood to be far more complex than initially reported.

What began as a story of a military raid on a cultural festival is evolving into a layered account involving a pre-dawn targeted operation, a disrupted traditional event, the presence of armed actors, and competing claims about civilian involvement.

As new evidence continues to emerge, the need for careful verification—and for a clear, authoritative account—has never been greater.

For now, the truth remains contested.

MMI News continues to investigate.
