The National Vice President of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), Honorable Osih Joshua has confirmed that Ni John Fru Ndi, will not contest for the post of the party’s chairman, during the SDF elective congress in July 29, 2023.
According to the declarations of Hon. Osih, it had always been at the back of the chairman’s mind to step aside for another person to take leadership of the party.
Fru Ndi who has been described as the “father of Cameroon’s democracy” has led the SDF party as chair for over 3 decades (since its creation.)
In a latest interview with the press, Joshua Osih said the chairmanship role will be executed by someone else.
He made the revelations as he chaired the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Saturday June 03, 2023 in Yaoundé, in the absence of Ni John Fru Ndi.
“The national chairman has mentioned several times that he was no longer going to run for re-election.” Osih Joshua declared. “It is going to be a historic congress… probably the first time that there will be a change of party head since the advent of multi-party politics in Cameroon,” he added.
In essence, Fru Ndi had already hinted since February 2021 that he was not going to renew his mandate as head of the party.
Nevertheless, several doubts emerged after the party was plagued by internal crisis, with many thinking it was going to delay his decision to relinquish his power.
A camp has emerged within the party, asking for a democratic transfer of power, which they say “must take the opinion of grassroot members to account.”
