Nigeria suspends messaging platform, Twitter

The Nigerian government has disrupted the use of social media application, Twitter.

Quoting the country’s information minister, Lai Mohammed, reports say he noted that activities on the platform “are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”

For this reason, Minister Lai noted, the federal government had ”suspended (Twitter) indefinitely”.

Information ministry special assistant Segun Adeyemi is quoted telling AFP: “I can’t answer technicalities… operations will be suspended indefinitely” when quizzed over when the suspension would take off.

The move by the Nigerian government follows a row over a tweet by the country’s president. Twitter had deleted a remark made by President Muhammadu Buhari’s official account, a move attributed to violation of its terms and policies.

Since the decision, many have taken to social media calling out the government over the move they say violates their right to information and freedom of expression.
