In a targeted military operation on Thursday, June 27, 2025, Nigerian Army troops from the 6th Brigade (Sector 3) of Operation Whirl Stroke killed an armed suspect in Taraba State. They classed this as a notable step in ongoing security efforts in the region.

Successful Tactical Ambush in Ussa

The operation was conducted in the Ussa area of Taraba State, following what military authorities described as “credible intelligence.” According to Captain Olubodunde Oni, acting spokesperson for the brigade, the intelligence enabled troops to set up a successful ambush.

“A combined team of soldiers executed a well-coordinated maneuver that led to the neutralization of a suspected bandit,” Oni said. “The troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, multiple rounds of ammunition, a motorcycle, and several mobile phones.”

Military sources added that other members of the group reportedly fled the scene, some believed to be injured, retreating into the surrounding forest.

Ongoing Security Operations

Brigade Commander Major General Kingsley C. Uwa praised the performance of the troops, describing the operation as a “disciplined execution of a strategic directive.” He emphasized the army’s commitment to continuing operations aimed at restoring stability in the region.

“Our offensive actions will persist until all threats are completely neutralized,” General Uwa stated.

Call for Civilian Support

In addition to outlining the military’s next steps, General Uwa called on local communities to assist in the fight against insecurity by providing timely information to security agencies.

“We urge residents to report any suspicious activity. Security is a shared responsibility, and collaboration with civilians remains essential,” he said.

Taraba State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has faced intermittent security challenges, including banditry and communal tensions. The June 27 operation forms part of broader efforts by Operation Whirl Stroke—a multi-agency security initiative—to address armed violence in Nigeria’s central and northeastern regions.

Military authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining a visible and proactive presence in Taraba and other affected areas.
