Nkambe Mayor Expresses Gratitude for Debt Cancellation of 68 Million FCFA

The Mayor of Nkambe Council in Cameroon’s Northwest region, Shey Musa, has extended his heartfelt thanks to the Minister of Decentralisation and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam, for the cancellation of a debt totaling 68 million FCFA. This debt was incurred by the council from the Special Council Support Fund for Mutual Assistance, known by its French acronym, Feicom.

Mayor Musa expressed his appreciation during a recent visit to the Ministry of Decentralisation, noting that the minister serves as the board chair of Feicom’s board of directors. He highlighted that, apart from his gratitude, the municipality has benefitted significantly from the 100 million FCFA allocated annually from Feicom, leading to the completion of about 200 projects since 2019. The most recent project includes the construction of sheds in the Nkambe Market.

During the visit, Mayor Musa was accompanied by the mayors of Wum and Tubah, who also updated Minister Georges Elanga Obam on their respective activities, challenges, and aspirations.

“The Mayor of Tubah Council, Martin Tanjong, discussed his desire to kickstart a presidential project worth 124 million FCFA,” the ministry noted in a statement. Tanjong also highlighted the necessity for additional funding from Feicom to address waste management in Tubah, where the population has nearly doubled since the establishment of the University of Bamenda.

Mayor Dighambong Anthony of Wum addressed ongoing challenges, particularly regarding access to Wum due to deteriorating road conditions. Despite this, he mentioned that several projects, including the market and the Wum town hall, are nearing completion.

“Building on these positive developments, the three mayors invited the Minister of Decentralisation and Local Development to visit their councils as part of his field visits,” the ministry statement added.
