“No doubt some university graduates are unable to spell” reactions to GCE leakage scandal

The Cameroon GCE Board is under mounting pressure as reports of leaks of the ongoing examination questions have found themselves on social media.

it has been alleged that some examination center heads have resorted to illegally leaking questions beforehand to students in exchange for money.

This shocking trend, which has somehow been normalized, is being done mostly via WhatsApp groups, and other student associations.

On social media many people are now calling for the GCE Board to immediately step in and take immediate action on behalf of other genuine students who may end up being most affected. The integrity of the exam has also been questioned, as previous leakages reported had never been thoroughly addressed by the board.

An angry reaction from Kits Chris on Facebook says “People just pass the GCE anyhow, go the university and see how they are messing up. A graduate is unable to spell. The base has been reduced to something one cannot explain,”

“These kind of human beings who have decided to sink a whole generation are not supposed to live amongst us, they are prisoners and should be send to prison immediately where they rightly belong.” Mbakwa Phosphat on facebook also reacted.

With the recent leaks, some suggest that it has only been exacerbated by social media, and not something new. “GCE has always been like this, what has made it worst is social media,” suggested Ray MJ on Facebook

According to Nformi Hamlet Kimeng, these leakages are why “… education has lost its value. The students have refused to study because they know they will get the question and answers before going to write, and those officials whom papers have been entrusted to are not trustworthy… The GCE BOARD needs to do something about this.”

Despite these mounting pressure, the Cameroon GCE Board has so far not taken concrete action against the leakages. The reputation of the examination has taken a hit in recent years, with unresolved scandals like such being at the very heart of it.

For how long will the authorities remain quiet?
