Nigerian Nollywood veteran actress Patience Ozokwor has received an honorary doctorate degree celebrating her decades of contributions to the entertainment industry.

The 66-year-old received a doctorate in Theatre and Media Arts from the UK-based Achievers Network Academy recently.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) handed the award to her on Saturday. Adebayo Salami and Jide Kosoko, two Yoruba actors, also received honours.

The awards were meant to honour their legendary contributions to the growth of the Nigerian film industry (Nollywood) and African cinema at large.

After receiving the honour, Patience Ozokwor shared her joy on her Instagram page, stating, “Today was like a movie. Honorary Doctorate Degree. Thank you Unilag. Thank you.”

Popularly known as Mama G, Patience Ozokwor is among Nollywood’s pioneers and has featured in over 100 movies.

From becoming an announcer and presenter on Radio Nigeria, she rose to fame in 1999 after appearing in the movie Authority.

She has graced TV screens in multiple movies since then, the most popular among them being Ukwa (2001); Ukwa na Uka (2002); Two Rats (2003); Billionaires Club (2003); Blood Sister (2003).

Recently, she has starred in The Ghost and the Tout Too  (2021) The Ghost Killer (2021). In 2022, she starred in Depths of Despair Agatha; Hila Grandma (2022) Wedding in Nigeria (2022) among others. Finally, in 2023, she starred in Mother-in-Law, The Scuffle, and Bigger Fish.

The Doctorate Degree is the latest accolade honouring her towering career.
