Officials of the Bamenda Regional hospital have disclosed that in the past 48 hours, the hospital has diagnosed 11 cases of the more deadly Covid-19 variant known as the Delta variant with four of those diagnosed in critical state under oxygen support.

The Delta variant which is more contagious comes with a lot of severe forms. The recent cases of those infected have drastically increased.

The head of the North West Expanded Program on Immunization Dr Cornelius Chebo highlights that vaccination doesn’t prevent the person from contracting the virus but limits the manifestation of the virus on its victims.

“Vaccination doesn’t prevent you from having Covid-19. On the contrary, it prevents you from having the severe forms of Covid-19 that may lead to death”, Dr Cornelius Chebo said.

He encouraged the eligible population to get vaccinated so as to keep the pandemic at bay in the North West region.

The Delta variant could be 60% more contagious than the other variants like the English Alpha variant, South African Beta variant. According to the World Health Organisation, WHO, some evidence also suggests that the Delta variant is linked to more severe and longer-lasting cases.

According to reports, Cameroon has used just 12% of its Covid-19 vaccines, with only 68,000 people receiving at least one dose due to widespread mistrust in the shots.

Misinformation on social media has fueled reluctance, according to the Cameroon Public Health minister.
