North West governor, Adolphe Lele l’Afrique has enumerated government’s advancements against separatist fighters in the crisis-plagued North West region.
Governor Lele while speaking in Yaounde today where he is taking part in the governors’ conference, said government had made record gains against separatists, and is gradually winning the local population to its side.
“The population,” he said, “are more than before supporting security forces in the fight to bring back normalcy in the North West region. A majority have tuned their back to the secessionists that deceived them at the beginning of the crisis.”
He went on to cite the academic successes in the region, noting that preparations for the new academic year are well on course: “The results of the exams this year are very encouraging for the regions and the investment rate is well executed. Last year there was close to 90% execution of the budget. Those are indications that things are coming back to normalcy despite the major challenges we are still facing.”
Governor Lele also mentioned the Bamenda-Babadjou road, stating that the stretch was finally going to get fixed – an umpteenth promise.
The Ministry of Public Works, he said, has ensured the road is worked upon, as well as the much awaited ring road.
His words: “things are already set for the ring road whose contracts are soon going to be signed … We are just waiting for the work to begin.”
Despite government’s moves, many continue to posit that the Anglophone crisis cannot be won with violence.
Many areas of the region continue to witness bloody attacks, with civilians bearing the largest casualties.
Some localities remain inaccessible, and social and educational activities, grounded, owing to gun exchanges between government forces and separatist fighters.
