The North West region registered its first coronavirus case Monday April 20th 2020. This comes close to two months after the first coronavirus case was detected in Cameroon. The Governor of the North West region Adolph Lele L’Afrique has called on the population to double the respect of COVID-19 preventive measures.
Fear of the unknown has gripped the population of the North West following the announcement of the first coronavirus case. The region has been on the heat of insecurity, ghost town observations as Ambaboys fighting for the restoration of Ambazonia continue to battle with the military.
“Before now, I called for the lock down of the North West region to safe the population but the government could not listen and take appropriate measures. How do we contain the spread of the pandemic in a region that is already weakened by war since 2017? a trader in Bamenda told Mimi Mefo Info.
To some Bamenda city dwellers, government’s delay to shutdown Cameroon when the virus was not in the national territory is same mistake the North West has committed.
Cameroon counts 1.163 infected persons, 816 active cases, 307 recovered cases and 42 deaths.
Of these statistics, the Centre region tops the chat with 691 cases followed by the Littoral with 382 then the West Region comes third with 67 cases. With a total of nine regions that have already detected at least a case of the virus, the far North region is the only region safe from COVID-19 as of April 21st 2020.
