The Open Institute of Technology (OPIT) has launched a new Professional Doctorate in Applied Artificial Intelligence, a fully online Level 8 qualification designed to meet the growing demand for advanced AI leadership skills across Africa and other rapidly digitising regions.

The programme, which begins in September 2026, comes at a time when countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Cameroon are witnessing rapid expansion in technology ecosystems, fintech innovation, digital governance and AI-driven business transformation.

OPIT Targets Africa’s Expanding AI Economy

As artificial intelligence continues reshaping industries globally, Africa’s digital economies are increasingly seeking professionals capable of leading AI adoption responsibly and effectively.

OPIT says the new doctorate programme is tailored to professionals working in sectors such as finance, healthcare, telecommunications, education and public policy, where AI is already influencing decision-making and service delivery.

Unlike traditional PhD programmes that focus largely on academic theory, the Professional Doctorate in Applied Artificial Intelligence places emphasis on practical application and real-world impact. Participants are expected to develop AI-driven solutions that can be implemented within organisations and industries, with assessments evaluating both academic quality and the practical value of research outcomes.

“In a world where knowledge evolves at an unprecedented pace, education can no longer be considered a phase of life but must be a continuous process,” said Francesco Profumo, Rector of OPIT.

He added that innovative doctoral programmes such as this are intended to prepare professionals to lead both technological and social transformation.

Flexible Online AI Doctorate Designed for Working Professionals

According to OPIT, the programme has been specifically structured for professionals, executives, managers, academics and researchers seeking flexible learning opportunities while continuing their careers.

Riccardo Ocleppo, Founder of OPIT, said the institution is already seeing strong demand from major African technology hubs.

“We are seeing a very clear demand across countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Cameroon for leaders who can use AI responsibly and productively, translating technical possibilities into decisions and results,” he said.

Ocleppo added that the online structure of the programme offers working professionals the opportunity to pursue advanced AI education without relocating or interrupting their careers.

The programme also includes an intermediate exit pathway. From the second year onward, participants who decide not to complete the full doctorate can graduate with a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Applied Artificial Intelligence.

Ethical and Responsible AI Adoption at the Core

OPIT says the programme will focus not only on technical competence but also on ethical and sustainable AI implementation.

“The challenge is not simply understanding AI, but applying it rigorously and responsibly to generate value,” said Lorenzo Livi.

He explained that the programme is designed to train professionals capable of leading AI-enabled transformation while ensuring responsible adoption practices.

Admission Requirements for the Applied AI Doctorate

Applicants seeking admission into the Professional Doctorate in Applied Artificial Intelligence must possess a master’s degree in a STEM-related discipline.

However, OPIT says candidates from non-STEM backgrounds may also qualify if they have at least five years of professional experience in sectors where artificial intelligence plays a significant role.

Applications for the inaugural class are currently open.
