Sunday, September 29, was an unusual day for Christians of Presbyterian Church (PC) Kumba Town in Meme Division, South West, after anonymous protesters locked up the worship hall. Christians gathered at the building for Sunday service and held the service outside the Church premises.

Some Christians believe that Rev Ebot’s transfer relates to the upcoming elections in the PCC, where outgoing Moderator Fonki Samuel Forba faces accusations of undermining the Church’s constitution by handpicking candidates.

Images that surfaced online showed the worship house locked with affixed placards carrying protest messages, contesting the transfer of the congregation’s pastor.

The PCC hierarchy redeployed Pastor Ebot Jones after he spent two months in Kumba Town, and MMI understood that the Christians were protesting this move.

Blaming the Moderator of the PCC and his collaborators, the protesting Kumba Town Christians praised Rev. Ebot for his outstanding service to the congregation during his brief stay.

“Rev Ebot Jones is going nowhere. He has given us peace,” a message on one of the placards read.

Another placard said, “PC Kumba Town should not be a battleground for the Moderator and his clique.”

Another message read, “Rev Ebot has liberated us from financial burden.”

The congregation held Sunday service outside the church building since the worship house remained inaccessible.

A Resurfacing Crisis

Presbyterian Church Kumba Town has previously been embroiled in a crisis that sparked public debates about the Church’s leadership and management.

On August 21, 2022, someone locked the congregation’s building, and people found fetish objects in front of the church on a Sunday morning.

It took the intervention of the Kumba Traditional Council to discard the objects.
